| "From 1985 through 2000, an average of 400 homes were destroyed in wildfires each year. Between 2001 and 2011 the annual average jumped to 1,354 homes.” If you are reading this newsletter the odds are very good that a friend, a neighbor, or you personally have experienced the devastation of wildfire. Colorado Tree Farmer and professional author, Linda Masterson, has written a handbook for forest landowners that clearly and concisely explains the dangers of wildfire, how to mitigate the damage that can be caused, and how to survive the aftermath should wildfire destroy everything you own. She writes from a unique perspective because she and her husband own and manage a Tree Farm in the Wildland Urban Interface. They thought that they were better prepared than most. But they were "nowhere near as well prepared as we should have been. Or could have been." Linda's impeccable research and concise writing style provide the information that we all need, but few of us have, in order to be reasonably prepared for wildfire. Over 40 Tree Farmers, forest industry professionals and guests attended the quarterly meeting of this local group. The next meeting will be in May. ____________________________ Guest speaker Terry Thompson, Fire Chief for the West Douglas County Fire Protection District, discussed the things that landowners could do to help fire fighters respond more efficiently, effectively and safely to emergency calls. He also donated his training room for future Tree Farm meetings. The next meeting will be announced soon. |
